Spain has a long and rich mosaic heritage dating back to Roman times and running up to the organic architectural legacy of Antoni Gaudí. Indeed, many Roman architectural sites have been discovered in Andalucia, including some beautifully preserved mosaic floors. The museum in our course venue contains an almost complete, and beautifully detailed Roman mosaic floor recovered from a villa nearby. The tradition of mosaics has been embedded in Spanish art since then, and this course looks at more contemporary and organic design and style suitable for beginners and improvers.

This course is designed to be an introduction to Trencadís, or Pique Assiette, techniques of cutting and shaping discarded ceramics to make the pieces with which to create mosaic works of art. Students will work on a minimum of two pieces: a small, personal piece that will not be too heavy to take away at the end of the course and a bespoke element for a mosaic mural, enhancing a wall in the host village of Moclín.

The emphasis on this course is to use mosaic and the techniques of mosaic to create lasting and beautiful works of art and giving you the confidence to make your own mosaics when home.
