MIXED MEDIA: COLOUR, TEXTURE & LINE

14-21 october 2025

TUTOR: PENELOPE ANSTICE

In this course we will be using waterbased paint, inks and chalk pastel.

Both watercolour and gouache are welcome and any beginners will be given plenty of guidance in the materials and how to use them.

Mixed media is fun and gives a wonderful freedom and less obligation to adhere to the ‘rules’ of a particular medium.

This area is rich in colour, line and texture and the village and surrounding area present a myriad subjects close to home.

AIMS OF THE COURSE

Each day we will sketch outside to produce small colour and line studies in the village and surrounding landscape. There is a wonderful, spacious studio available in which to finish larger pieces in a more controlled environment.

Penelope will give plenty of guidance throughout the week in the fundamentals of painting, ie composition, colour tone and perspective.  She will give small demonstrations each day and students will be encouraged to move out of their comfort zone and try new ideas and techniques.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

PENELOPE ANSTICE

Penelope was born in Scotland and trained at Edinburgh College of Art where she obtained a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting.  She lived in London for a decade and in Italy and the Netherlands before returning to her native Scotland where she has a studio in Dundee.

Penelope has been running painting courses for over 20 years in Scotland, Italy, France and Spain as well as at the Heatherleys School of Fine Art in London.  She has travelled extensively to paint, visiting India numerous times as well as Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal and Kenya always with the aim to capture the fleeting moments of colour and energy these countries present.

Penelope shows her work in galleries throughout the UK in both joint and solo exhibitions and undertakes many private commissions.  When not travelling her work is mainly landscape based, she likes to paint en plein air and to work up larger paintings in oil back in the studio.  She says ‘My work usually starts off on a figurative basis but back in the studio I like to follow my instincts and let the work drift a bit, away from the purely representational, into abstraction.’

When teaching Penelope’s aim is to show students as much technique as possible.  She says ‘with sound knowledge of the essential elements of painting, students can begin to find their own voice in their work’
